Loon Lake Backpacking Trip

Permission Slip

When:  August 15-17, 2008
Where: Meet behind the Zoo Friday at 4:00 PM,
We should be back to the Zoo on Sunday afternoon around 3:00.

Uniform:  No
Food:
We will be leaving from behind the zoo on Friday, August 15th and spending the night at the trailhead. Plan your menus for Friday night sack dinner, Saturday breakfast at the cars. Lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast should be HIGH calorie, nutritious food we carry in. Plan on using backpack stoves for your hot foods.  I will check back with everyone on the use of open fires and fire restrictions as we get closer to departure.  This is a leave no trace campout, if you bring it in, you bring it out so its best to minimize your food containers and packaging prior to departure.  PLEASE NOTE- Patrols, water here is not potable, so H2O must be either boiled, filtered or chemically treated before drinking.

Fee:  $10 camping fee per scout, $15.00 gas money for the patrol driver, $8.00 for lunch on Sunday. Directions: 3 miles east of Placerville on Highway 50 to Ice House Rd (Forest Rd #3), take the Look Lake fork.

This is about a 4 – 5 mile hike, there is some uphill and some down hill. This campout is a great opportunity to finish up on outdoor merit badges; the lake is stocked throughout the summer with trout, lots of critters to observe in their environment and places a plenty to make your own shelter.  At 6400 feet elevation, Loon Lake is on the border of the Desolation Wilderness Area and is on the Rubicon Trail. The high sierra scenery is awesome!!

  •     Plan for afternoon thunder storms, rain gear is a must.
  •     You will want to bring the 10 essentials
  •     Any new patrols needing pack checks please let me know.
